Dear Greater St. Albert Catholic Separate School Division Community,
We are the education workers of CUPE Local 2550 in Morinville and Legal.
Every day, we pour our hearts into supporting children, teachers, and schools because we believe in the power of education.
But here’s the reality: negotiations have stalled, and we’re facing an offer that will reduce the quality of education for students across the district.
After eight years of zero wage increases, the employer’s wage offer is nowhere near enough to keep up with Alberta’s rising cost of living. Some new employees could also face cuts of up to 10%.
But this is ultimately about our kids and the quality of education they receive.
If the employer is allowed to hire lower paid workers under their proposed plan, they are incentivized to further reduce the hours of the experienced staff working with our most vulnerable kids. This will negatively impact the quality of education for all students.
Students need stability in these critical years of education. Our schools are already in dire need of support. We need a deal that provides consistency to both our members and kids, not plans that stand in the way of student success.
Staffing and retention are already an issue. This can only lead to further instability for our community’s kids.
Over 1,100 Albertans have already stood with us by signing our open letter.
Now, we need your voice. Public advocacy has proven to be effective in helping groups like ours push employers to make the right decisions. This is where you come in.
Sign the petition. Demand fair pay for the workers who are dedicated to your children’s success.
